Man Man
Rabbit Habits
You may have smoked out of an apple, but have you made sweet, strange music with one? The five-man band, Man Man, is no stranger to using an apple, fireworks, or, just plain knocking shit over to find the perfect sound effect for a song. Their new bluesy album, Rabbit Habits uses many other kooky effects in achieving its chaotic sound, and is so animated that a Fantasia-like cartoon should accompany every song. The playful opening track, ‘Mister Jung Stuffed,’ for example, evokes a boy bicycling through an Alice and Wonderland world, the surroundings changing around him, black tunnels opening up beneath him, swallowing him up into a colorful, Dixieland world and eventually onto a stage where Man Man themselves start to bang on the chrome of his bike to create their next song. The sexy, languid horns in ‘Big Trouble’ call to mind a burlesque cartoon frog batting her eyelashes and pursing her lips as she lounges down a staircase fit for Chicago the musical. Rabbit Habits, like a cartoon, tells a story, makes you laugh and, most of all, makes you happy. Listening to Honus Honus’s jazzy voice and the whacky xylophone allows you to orchestrate your own cartoon.
