Static Revenger – Static Revenger

No Tags

If you’re expecting to hear classic Static Revenger dance/house/techno laced with deep bass, this is definitely not that. Dennis White, a.k.a. Static Revenger, goes in a completely different direction with this full-length, hence the Love Song Surprise title, because he gives us a collection of mellow love ballads instead of everything else he’s put out before. A quick glance at the 10 song titles will reveal the soft nature of this album, which disappoints in comparison to his powerful and popular club singles of yesteryear. He has a ‘chillout version’ of his major hit, ‘Happy People,’ which is the best song on the album because of its yummy lush electronic accents: lulling, aqueous vibe: and the biggest plus: he doesn’t actually sing on it. Too often, his alt-rock voice downgrades the potential laid out by some of the tracks’ production. A perfect example of this is ‘Sweetest Day’ (something Britney Spears played at her wedding’enough said), where a sweet, simple acoustic and electronic beat blend is contrasted with his creepy man half-talking vocals. If you’re looking to hear well done mellow versions of the kind of songs White’s produced before, stick with ‘So High (Acoustic Version)’ and the afore mentioned ‘Happy People (Chillout Version)’ because they have electronic music’s combination of repetitiveness and building progression. ‘I Feel Love’ is a gentle, airy track that better fits his vocals and remains consistent in its mellowness. However, steer clear of ‘Don’t Give Up’ and ‘No. 1 Fan,’ and don’t expect to be impressed by any other tracks either. Static Revenger should stick to producing the club hits he’s famous for.
