This Ain’t A Scene, It’s a Goddamn Dot on a Map

This Aint A Scene, Its a Goddamn Dot on a Map

Do you ever get the impression that music critics and bloggers tout bands based on location? It’s like there’s some insatiable need to create “scenes” when the landscape gets bleak. If you look back to 2002, Detroit was definitely a focal point. Chalk it up to the emergence of the White Stripes (and to a lesser extent, the Von Bondies), but suddenly it seemed that if a band had a garage and a couple of guitars in Motor City, they were destined for press stardom. Remember the Go? The 45s? Soledad Brothers? Whirlwind Heat? Don’t feel bad if you don’t. These are bands that probably wouldn’t have earned a shred of recognition had it not been for their Detroit connections. And ultimately, couldn’t maintain their notoriety once public interest in their scene had dissipated.
