Guilty Simpson
Ode to the Ghetto
Guilty Simpson is undoubtedly the grimiest rhymer in Stones Throw history. With vocals resembling a laid-back Ice Cube and an ability to spit ghetto war stories with wit, his well rounded debut doesn’t drown in debauchery, but revels in versatility. There’s plenty of rough stuff, including the Mr. Porter (D12’s Kon Artis) produced ‘Getting Bitches,’ where Simpson viciously derides his ‘maniac’ lady. But on ‘Kinda Live,’ his heart is exposed as he recounts his paramour’s fi nest traits without any hint of irony. Urban insight fills the Detroit MC’s ‘The Real Me’ as he laments, ‘Many blood stains paint the Ave./Makes you wonder what choice we have.’ The tune is bolstered by echoing loops from Black Milk, who snags the production spotlight despite the heavy hitting contributions of J Dilla and Madlib. Milk and Simpson’s electrifying collab ‘Run’ erupts with pounding pianos and cements his rookie disc’s rock solid status.
