Black Ghosts from coast to coast

The Black Ghosts — comprised of Simon Lord (the former lead singer of Simian) and Theo Keating (DJ Touche from The Wiseguys) — brought their decadent cynicism to the Echoplex last night. At the event, several copies of the new album, Mixtape, were given out for free, although the new release can be downloaded here.

Their set of soulful, self-depreciating songs were all, in a way, about love, depicting relationships as irrational episodes, a sort of experiment in obsession, inextricably connected to vulnerability and mania. It’s no consequence that the UK duo has described their work as “a peculiar British noir, where the divorcee next door dreams of nocturnal visitations from predatory incubi, and an awkward boy genius tinkers with forbidden science in the garden shed.”

Cryptic and sarcastic, The Black Ghosts’ bootie-shaking electro is, at times, undercut by existential lyrics, some depicting violent hypothetical situations — such as strangling and ex-girlfriend, holding her at gunpoint, and setting her home ablaze (in hope of initiating a conversation with her, of course). Simon Lord is right — sometimes spilling your guts about your ex to a room full of total strangers is the best way to get the hell over it. Judging by the amount of people getting down on the dance floor, it was a venture equally cathartic.
