Poker Flat Recordings Volume 6 – Dead man’s Hand (Review)

Poker Flat Recordings Volume 6

Dead man's Hand

Released by Poker Flat Recordings

In poker, a ‘dead man’s hand’ is commonly known as a two-pair hand (especially two black aces and two black eights). Supposedly, that was the five-card draw that Wild Bill Hickok made when he was murdered. Sure, Mr. H didn’t make techno (he died in 1876 mind you) or even listen to it (again-1876), but I’m sure if he could somehow begin to comprehend what we’re talking about, he’d be proud of this compilation. The party is kicked off by Steve Bug & Cl’s’ ‘Behind The Curtains.’ It’s a rather nice way of opening things up too. A simple hihat/stick combo makes way into a dream-like pad and some of the nicest handclaps I’ve heard in a while. Looking for something a little more adventurous? ‘Relapse’ by Jeff Samuel sounds like a dance floor duel between a metallic clam burping underwater bubbles and a tiny (yet fierce) robotic pooch. However, there are some tracks that are a touch imbalanced. ‘Cold Eyes’ on disc number dos is fine and dandy until Mr. Claves comes along and overpowers the mix but when extinguished in the beginning of the next track, order restores. Interestingly enough, the tracks on the first disc aren’t mixed together whereas those on the second one are. Whether or not that might irk you, there still remains a great deal of versatility in this compilation. The first cd might quench your thirst for some more ‘chill out’ bangers while the second might play a bit more to the part of you that just wants to dance. Not to say that there aren’t both types on both discs, but overall they have different moods about them.
