Usually, referring to something as ‘not rocket science’ is a pretty safe statement. In this case however, Mochipet is making one hell of an argument’for hip hop and even music in general. Sure, he himself isn’t a rocket scientist, but his dad is. His mom? A kindergarten teacher. So what was the result of their loins? One very versatile producer. On Microphonepet, you’ll get a taste of everything from straight emceein’ (’We Put It Down’ featuring Dopestyle, Pro The Leader and Hieroglyphics’ Opio) and danceable grime-like mayhem (’Girls and Boys and Toys’ with Jahcoozi) to very strong electronic influences (the majority of the album). While the style of song you listen to might shift quite significantly, there are definitely two factors that remain constant: a strong roster of guest emcees and bass custom built to move booties of the large persuasion. Of course, you shouldn’t really be too surprised: this is coming from the same guy who’s put out records on such labels as Bpitchcontrol, Tigerbeat6, and Schematic. This has definitely got to be the strong point of the album. While there is a lot of genre-bending going on, the sounds are familiar enough for you to know that you’re still listening to the same album. In case you haven’t noticed, we here at the magazine love genre-benders-I said genre! Oh great: now I gotta do some major e-damage control before web dwellers everywhere think we’re weirder than we already are.
