Who would’ve thought that a Prince tribute album would be able to cover as many musical genres as the legendary artist himself? Then again, it’s easy when each artist only has to serve one style at a time. From reggae (The Dynamics) to seductive funk (7 Hurtz w/Peaches) and even hypnotic ambient (Kode 9), Prince fanatics will get a thrill out of this salute. Granted, the gentle vocals of Stina Nordenstam version of “Purple Rain” can’t pop out any more than on the timeless original. But with this many masterpieces covered by the obscure (Blue States), to the highly anticipated (D’Angelo’s “She’s Always In My Hair” might be the only thing we get from his still delayed album for a long time)Controversy offers ample variety without butchering the best.
