You will have these polaroids forever. It will be on your mirror. It will stay with you when you move. You won’t throw it away no matter how bad it is.Rony Alwin (Rony’s Photobooth)

This news has almost put me in a state of grief. For those who haven’t heard, the Polaroid Corporation has ended it’s production of its instant film. This news may not come as a surprise as digital cameras have taken over but the news is saddening and shocking none the less. As of Friday, Feb 8, 2008, Polaroid instant film is on her deathbed.

It’s hard to believe that one of film’s most popular siblings is laying on her deathbed. Polaroids has seen it’s rise in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, only to fall to the oncoming digital convenience. While the idea of Polaroids has experienced several reincarnations with products such as the iZone, the soon to be dead Polaroid was thought to be coming back as more kids were carrying polaroids but this small resurgence wasn’t enough…

While the life of Polaroids is about to develop her last image, we should not forget about the uniqueness of the polaroid. Hopefully, for most of us, Polaroid has given us fun and awkward moments that we can only keep. At the same time, I’m hoping that somewhere, most of us still have a memory captured on a print that we dare not throw away.

Polaroid…I don’t know what to say…you will be missed.
