Black Ghosts and Kids at CMJ

Black Ghosts and Kids at CMJ

I get to NYC after not being here since the year 2000. And here it is dirty, in your face, a bikini bar and two guys from Austin, TX. 2 beers=good. 7 beers=bad. Especially when you have a job interview the next day.

I know exactly where to pick up my CMJ badge, as I soon as I see a flood of hipsters crossing the street. Perhaps I should note that 'hipsters' is a very serious word here, browsing Craigslist NYC recently I saw a rental ad that made a point to say “We're not hipsters but it's OK if you are.” Ha!

Sitting in Starbucks on 47th and 9th waiting for a friend, I heard a girl say “There's not a lot of opportunity there-you have to create your own. No one is going to hand you the key. Put yourself out there!” That could be the mission statement of CMJ, especially my trip here where I'm looking to live and work in the beautiful and fierce NYC.

Wednesday late night I get to Delancey just in time for the Black Ghosts (check them out on next 1,000), Simian’s Simon Lord and The Wiseguys’ Theo Keating are a DJ duo in skeleton t-shirts, and Lord, having been Simian's vocalist, sang on a few tracks. The weirdest part was that it sounded amazing and only about ten people were watching. Maybe everyone else was downstairs watching Dim Mak's Deadly Syndrome?

After I danced alone to the Black Ghosts, I made my way to Cakeshop (which really is a vegan Cake shop, yum!) and watched Black Kids perform. They had an amazing energy, the basement was packed and sweaty and everyone was dancing. Black Kids sounded like Mika Miko, but not as drunk and more melodic. And I guess they are blowing up, even though they’ve only played about five shows total. They already have some girl from the UK as one of their managers. Dreams can come true kids!
