Back in the spring when we told you about the vowel-deficient Free YR Radio tour, we wondered how the series of free in-store concerts was going to accomplish its stated purpose of raising money for independent radio stations around the country. Now we have the answer in the form of the traditional post-tour compilation album from the tour’s participants.
The disc, out Oct 20, features a live or rare cut from each and every band that took part in the tour’s series of one-off shows. The disc will only be sold through tour sponsor Urban Outfitter’s stores, Web site and catalog, and it features cuts from Klaxons, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., The Rapture, El-P and others.
All profits from the CD will be divided among the campaign’s participating radio stations including: WLUW (Chicago), KTRU (Houston), KEXP (Seattle), Y-Rock On XPN (Philadelphia), KZSC (Santa Cruz), 89.3 The Current (Minneapolis), WERS (Boston), WKNC (Raleigh/Durham), WBWC (Cleveland), KGNU (Boulder), WHNU (New Haven) and KXLU (Los Angeles). Each station will receive a check to be used at its discretion.
