Yeah Yeah Yeahs rock downtown LA's Mayan 8/22/07!
Clad in a Zorro mask and a detachable tutu, and draping herself in Christmas tinsel, Karen O opened with 'Sealings', off the, um, the Spiderman 3 soundtrack, following it up with the scream-tastic, 'Rich'. When she noticed a wild pack of masked groupies clawing their way toward the stage barricade, she condescended, eye-to-eye with her crazed, teenster followers.
Those that weren't escorted out by security witnessed Karen O's priceless interpretive dancing interspersed with burlesque strip teases. Breaking up 'Down Boy' and 'Turn Into' with an acoustic version of 'Maps' was an interesting choice for the band, but ultimately made one of their best songs come across as a bit flat. On the flip side, 'Date with the Night' and the four-song encore was brilliantly executed (Karen O wailed on three mics at once before attempting to smash them into an oblivion).
Back stage, guitarist, Nick Zinner spoke to us about last month's EP release, Is Is. “EPs are more fun,” he explained, “There's less pressure on you than with a full length.” Zinner expects their next LP to come out sometime next year.
