It's not like the vocoder is new or anything, but since T-Pain proved to have hits and hits for days and days, the vox effect might as well be the hottest virgin on the block that every pop star is trying to bang. Even the Pied Piper of R&B has hopped on board the robot voice train for his “Same Girl Remix,” but Snoop Doggy Dogg? It just doesn't seem right.
Opening up with the airy synths that definitely aren't played in Thug Heaven, “Sexual Eruption” devolves into the boring kind of electronica that can only make for hilarious R&B burners…this one being extra creepy. To hear Uncle Snoop's unquestionably identifiable voice buried in layers of reverb while crooning about sexual eruptions, well, R Kelly has made less disturbing moments out of golden showers. Almost.
But this is the direction of rap/R&B for the next few months; between T-Pain's hit factory and Kanye West's daft “Stronger,” robot voices are about to be like minimal drum productions in 2006 or chipmunked soul in 2003. Bust out your best robot dance move—I use the swinging dead arm as my closer—and get ready for robot love on the dance floor. And just in case you can't get through the vocoder on “Sexual Eruption,” pay special close attention to the end of this creepy burner because Robot Snoop has a clarification for you: “sexual eruption, it's an orgasm.”
A robot orgasm, for sure.
