French Follies: Oizo Bumped, Electroma clipped

Friday night in Chicago didn’t go down completely as planned. Before even setting foot in the club the word was on the street that there would be no Mr. Oizo. DJ/Promoter Zebo explained the French DJ’s flight was overbooked, he was bumped and other flight cancellations kept him from making it to Chicago in time for the show.

Current plans call for Mr. Oizo to attempt the trip again in Sep. The show will be at Metro again with a related line up playing downstairs in Smartbar.

Of course the screening of Daft Punk’s Electroma was still happening. Unfortunately it too was a logistical victim, suffering from unsynched sound, fuzzy focus and, worst of all, the film was projected onto a square screen which left a good five or six feet of footage lost into the curtain on each side of the screen.

A true review of the movie isn’t fair under these conditions. The film about a pair of robots in a world full of robots is free of dialogue and driven by its cinematography and sound. With both elements out of whack, the movie’s impact was likely ruined.

Still, the Easy Rider inspired highway scenes should look good when the whole shot is visible. Even on the truncated screen, the high contrast masking scene looked amazing. It seems like a love it or hate it film, but this unfortunate screening left me undecided as to which side to take.
