Ah, the one-hit wonder. We’ve all been there’2:30 a.m., coming back from a night out with the guys only to find the soothing comfort of a VH1 countdown list of the biggest fluke hits in the business. Us3 certainly know what I’m talking about, as their only claim to fame comes with the 1994 top-ten hit ‘Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia),’ a song that has made its way onto many infamous lists. After a short hiatus, a new version of the group is back in an attempt to take their jazz-infused hip-hop to a new (re: old) audience.

Unfortunately, the stale rhymes and instrumental sameness of their new record Say What!? can’t come close to topping ‘Cantaloop,’ or even their closest musical comparison’The Low End Theory era A Tribe Called Quest. A few good lines, like ‘forget the cowbell cuz I’m not Bruce Dickinson’ can’t make up for the clunky, dated backing tracks and adult- contemporary-realm feel most of the songs dip into. These guys sure could’ve used Ron Carter on the bass.
