Radio is whack in general, but LA Hip Hop radio is straight ass. Last night, for the first time in years I turned on my dial to 105.9 in anticipation. Siruis satellite radio hard hitter DJ Skee (who’s clout became cream after Game’s 300 Bars and Black Wall Street tapes had the streets fiending) had his debut at Power last night. Skee will join Power-vet DJ Reflex every Wednesday night for “The Take Over.”
“They will keep up the great Power 106 tradition of Hip Hop exclusives, World Premieres, and the one of a kind artist interviews that our listeners have come to expect from Power 106!”claims Jimmy Steal, VP of Emmis Programming/Power 106 Program Director. In other words, this is Power’s attempt at trying to win over the grip of listeners who abandoned them long ago. K-Day’s “Hip Hop today and back in the day” campaign was a calamity that shaped them as commercial and drawl as Power. Can LA radio Hip Hop ever be able to do their coast, city and listeners justice?
It only managed to keep my attention for fifteen minutes before my finger slid to the disc three button, where Big L was hidding. But I caught some Weezy mixtape joints right at midnight, between Game on the air with Skee hyping the program. “None of that bubblegum shit is gonna be on here,” Game assured.
But it’s that bubblegum shit that the pre-pubescent teens crave and that keeps Power afloat. Can a show like this one is supposed to be fit in? Will DJ Skee help Power find again (if it ever had it) the pulse of the breathing creature that is hood hop or street hop or non-single hop or LA’s Hip Hop? Maybe it’s time to dare to turn your dial again…(remembers the top eight at eight)…or Maybe not.
