Phat Kat is a Detroit MC who once joined with J Dilla to form First Down, a group that fell through the cracks, like so many before and after it, when its label collapsed. More than a decade later, Phat Kat is hoping to fi nally make a name for himself with this debut solo album, Carte Blanche. Unfortunately, the album is full of tired raps like ‘Been in the game gettin respect, cashin’ them checks,’ and some angry, politically incorrect disses (’gayass homo’). On the bright side, there are some solid beats from J Dilla and fellow former Slum Village producer Young RJ on tracks like ‘My Old Label’ and ‘True Story Pt. 2.’ Also, pleasantly enough, Phat Kat does have a kind of cool voice reminiscent of the unfuckwitable Pharoahe Monch. If you’re just looking for something to nod your head to, Carte Blanche may even make your neck snap a bit, but if you’re searching for unique lyrical content, look elsewhere.
