Snowgoons
German Lugers
Given the extensive lineup of mid-major MCs that flip scripts on this debut from the four-man production unit out of Germany, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear they set up shop backstage at a New York venue like SOBs for a few weeks to record. The feel here is distinctly rugged East Coast hip-hop, with most talent hailing from EST meccas Philly (Last Emperor), Boston (Edo G) and NYC (El Da Sensei). The Snowgoons build crafty productions that are equal parts grimy and crisp, and often reach for a symphonic affect. The verses alternate between inspired and generic, the lesser-knowns more likely reduced to heard-it-all-before raps about gun-clapping. The must-download among the bunch is the left-coast posse cut ‘Black Woods’ (featuring MED and the Living Legends), driven by an irresistible, unintelligible female sample and punctuated by five strong verses. Despite the conspicuously Jeezyish snowman symbolism and claims to rep the South (Germany), German Lugers is strictly for fans of Boot Camp, Demigodz and the like.
