Hip-Hop loves it some dirty. Madlib is dusty. 2 Live Crew was filthy. Wu Tang? Grimy. And pretty much everything from ATL to Houston has been just plain dirty for a minute now. Count Bass D’s sixth LP, Act Your Waist Size is on something else. It’s the Count’s most furious doodle yet, and the side of his hand is surely smudged with ink, samples, non-sequitors and maaaad weapons of mass creation: the MPC mottled his working wardrobe. The charming gallimaufry sees choruses non-existent and verses rare, as the music skirts from music box melancholy (’Lunchroom Table Ensemble’) to falsetto-lite Dudley Perkinsisms (’Junkies’). ‘Half the Fun’ finds the Count sampling a mid-’90s sticky R&B love jam with the serious reverence of an Al Green hook, only to get hilarious with his humor: ‘International whore house of chickenheads eating waffles/it’s god awful.’ This kind of scattered soot is straight clean.
