The Decists, from Portland, Oregon, refuse easy categorization. In that way, their often throwback sound, fronted by singer-songwriter Colin Meloy, is really quite modern. Or, meta-modern, maybe. The Crane Wife is a Japanese folktale that inspires this album. It has so many standouts and, from beginning to end is impressive and large. Beating Sufjan Stevens by a narrow margin in the Longest Song Title category, ‘The Island, Come and See, the Landlord’s Daughter, You’ll Not Feel the Drowning’ is the group at its best’for 12:40 minutes, no less. Their only downfalls are of a piece with their charms: sometimes coming across as too affected and taking themselves too seriously. Ultimately though, this is an amazing, innovative, storytelling record that that’s you on fantastic, fun trip.
