Beat Journey

Released by Lex

South America making-out with South Bronx is probably the best way to describe this latest feat from the newly signed Lex Records soul-brother: Dr. Who Dat (who also goes by Jneiro Jarel). The now Philly, formerly New York-based producer-MC takes the listener on a psychedelic-Os Mutantes-reminiscent beat-escape while proudly displaying his Native Tongue African medallion. Jniero has worked with a host of venerable independent artists like DJ Spinna, Jazzanova and Count Bass D, but he broke independent ground with 3-Piece Puzzle in the Nu-Jazz and Broken Beat world. Since then, many have anticipated solo works and Beat Journey is proving to be a beautiful beginning. A constant rhythm-excursion with a range of experimental jazz mixed with thick soul expression, the record stays connected with its sweeping vintage tropicalia. Most artists tend to exploit foreign melody by over-sampling, but Who Dat manages to find a balance of raw instruments and well thought-out Portuguese accents. It’s the perfect CD for that catamaran ride in the South Pacific, just don’t spill the limejuice and suntan lotion.
